I believe after extensive research that you have a male black witch moth. (really it was a 30 second google search)http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.nps.gov/pais/naturescience/images/male-black-witch-285.gif&imgrefurl=http://www.nps.gov/pais/naturescience/insects.htm&h=210&w=285&sz=29&hl=en&start=4&sig2=adEEgHAIwStlRKcdEy91Tg&um=1&tbnid=DDocJHWZRdIjVM:&tbnh=85&tbnw=115&ei=Y67xRpHKD4aKgAOV-pGZCg&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dblack%2Bwitch%2Bmoth%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den
thanks, that sure looks right after my 2 minute search. Now I feel pretty cool that the largest moth in north america was right in my front yard.
