ANTS

We have crazy ants, just crazy. We have battled with them the entire time we've lived here which means 3 1/2 years. They aren't like this anywhere else, it is just crazy. Other people try to tell me they have ants, but they don't know what it is like here. They are here year round, not just when it is hot, or when it rains, or when it is cold. They rarely go in the kitchen, they just wander around it giant packs making me miserable. Today was the worst ever. Athena thought there was "a lot of dirt on the ground". It was just thousands of ants. I went to work spraying them with one of my random concoctions (mint/tea tree). We have used every natural method out there, orange, mint, bay leaves, etc. Nothing works. We spray poison, they are still here. Last year Chris taped up the entire inside of our house with masking tape, I thought he was crazy, but it did mean 3 blissful ant free months (coupled with some spraying). Will we have to disclose this when we sell our house! Geez. I threatened to call in the professionals today so Chris took another trip to Home Depot and sprayed away. I hate them and want them to just go away. Today I stayed away from home all day because I was so upset and didn't want to see them again. I don't even care if they live in our yard but please, stay out of our house, and off my babies. Especially since one of my babies is crawling and on the ground at their level all the time. I keep finding ants on him and sometimes they leave a little bite. So I guess I am not a total vegan, I do kill ants and right now I don't feel guilty about it at ALL!

Eek! That's really odd that they'd invade your house without being interested in the kitchen. We've only had ants for maybe a week in the last few years, and EO of cinnamon and mint drove them away, so I'm baffled by your ants. That would drive me nuts.

Nar nar!
I like Grants (Grants kills ants). It takes a day or two to work but has not failed me yet. I buy the round poison food things. They eat it, bring it home and don't come back. Put them in a couple of places where kids won't touch them but ants roam.

We have had some similar ant experiences and this year was the first (knock on wood) without... we took the advice of a landscape friend who suggested getting the yard in order.... feeding the plants with fishguts (not vegan by far, but listen on...), I started with the front side yard where they seemed to congregate and started building up the soil with the fertilizer (fish) alternating with seaweed fertilizer, then xtra mulch and more watering than I've done in the past.... so far so good.... apparently they need a hospitable underground to make a nest and this makes it not-so-appealing. Spraying actually makes more ants b/c the scouts get messages back and the queens disperse and make more.... try this!!

Wow that is a lot of ants!! We have ants but not swarms like that yet...and ours are year-round too. We sprinkle cornstarch on them and vacuum them up, it's supposed to dry them out in the vacuum. We also spray if they are totally out of hand...we've used Terro traps too... Grants is good too...

Where would you find fish guts? I like that idea, I already use fish emulsion on the plants... We don't fish THAT often.....

Good luck... you can always come over and hang out with our ants!

Ants make me crazy. Like, cry and yell crazy. So I feel for you, BIG. So sorry they're refusing to find another home.

On the other hand you should see if anyone has the book "Animal Speak" and have them look up ants for you. Maybe there's a message you're meant to get?

We did not tell the buyer that our old house was on one gigantic ant hill.
